Although the gorgeous cherry blossom that Japan is known for has not even begun to blossom up on mainland, it is already OVER for us here in Okinawa!! Our Sakura season only lasts a few short weeks and usually begins around the end of January and goes until the end of February.
We had an even shorter season this year because it has been uncommonly cold on the island…in fact, this year Okinawa recorded its FIRST EVER SNOWFALL!!!
And the trees here are a much brighter pink (as opposed to the light pink of the mainland blossoms) with sparser blossoms. But man, who cares! Cherry Blossom trees are BEAUTIFUL however you can get ’em.
In fact, I’m wondering if I can get a wee cherry blossom bonsai shipped to our next location…
We got to venture up north a few weeks ago to Nakajin to see our island’s blossoms this year and it was lovely.
We started at Mt. Yaedake and although there are some amazing trees here, you literally have to pull over on the side of the road to photograph them because they line the street. So we didn’t get many shots here!
We ate lunch at our favorite place up north, Pizza in the Sky!
And after lunch, we went to Nakajin Castle, where you can leisurely stroll through the cherry blossoms and the castle ruins and take as many pictures as you want. I recommend this site to anyone planning on Sakura in Okinawa next year!
Happy spring! Get out and enjoy those flowers!!!
